Promisses, then and now

Promises oil on canvas painting
12 years ago I've made the ball point pen drawing below. I was just a teenager dreaming about the love she was not allowed to have. I've made this imagining it's only me and her next to the sea. The city with it's people is far away and it's just the two of us. She, the blond woman with short hair in the right, is giving me a flower, the flower of love, promising me she will love me forever. Blue butterflies fly around us and dolphins play in the sea water.
Now, after so many years, I've made an oil on canvas painting about this teenage dream story

The poet Sappho, the Pleiades and the moon

The poet Sappho, the Pleiades and the moon, oil on canvas painting

The moon has set
And the Pleiades;
It is midnight,
The time is going by,
 And I sleep alone.

This is Sappho's midnight poem. This poem has inspired me to make the painting above, a painting of a lonely Sappho watching the Pleiades and the moon while they set at midnight.
Recently the UTA researchers have dated this poem between January 25 and March 31.
Sappho has written this poem feeling lonely, as lonely as I feel, that feeling of loneliness that we all have when we cannot be with the one we love or we want to love.

Sigillaria in the sunset

This is my oil on canvas painting of a sigillaria tree in the light of the carboniferous sunset, by the time when the sun was shining next to it's companion, a white dwarf. By that time the Earth was smaller, with a weaker gravitational field and that permitted the growth of the huge sigillaria and lepidodendron trees with their green elastic stems. Maybe today a sigillaria tree would break and fall under it's own weight

The portrait of Sappho's muse

The poem below, written by Sappho, has inspired me to make this painting. This is how I imagine the girl Sappho has written the poem for, the girl who has to leave the island of Lesbos, wearing a violet tiara and a necklace made of rosebuds dill and crocus.
It's a sad poem about a girl who had to leave Sappho and the isle of Lesbos against her will and against her feelings. It's poem abot tears, infinite sadness and love that is to weak to survive in a hostile world. Even if she loved Sappho, this girls had to leave her be cause she was forced to. There were long periods in history when women had no right to decide about their own lifes and could not follow their feelings.

I have not had one word from her

Frankly I wish I were dead
When she left, she wept
a great deal; she said to me, "This parting must be
endured, Sappho. I go unwillingly."
I said, "Go, and be happy
but remember (you know
well) whom you leave shackled by love
"If you forget me, think
of our gifts to Aphrodite
and all the loveliness that we shared
"all the violet tiaras,
braided rosebuds, dill and
crocus twined around your young neck
"myrrh poured on your head
and on soft mats girls with
all that they most wished for beside them
"while no voices chanted
choruses without ours,
no woodlot bloomed in spring without song..

A recurrent dream

This oil on canvas painting is about one of my recurrent dreams, me waiting for the train that will bring her to me. She is an enigma. She is always with me in my dreams but I've never meet her in my day by day life. Who she might be?

Tears for a lost love, oil on canvas painting

She's gone and behind her tears fall down like a cold autumnal rain in a dark lifeless landscape but there is still a drop of hope in the green light eye. I've made this oil on canvas painting on saturday.

Watching a star

The tree of the mind

I've made the oil on canvas painting above and the ball point pen drawing below this week. This is the tree of the mind, a pyramidal neuron in the neocortex. As I said before when we draw trees we draw our neurons and that's why the trees we draw tell so much about us. Somewhere deep in our mind we somehow know that the neurons have a tree shape.
